I recently had the pleasure of spending the weekend in Portland, OR to cheer on some of my favorite runners who were participating in the Portland Marathon.
Wandering around downtown Portland on the race weekend really reminded how much I enjoy this city. It certainly helped that the weather was gorgeous, but spending so much time on foot really allowed the architecture, culture, and foliage to shine.
For all it’s class, Portland manages to stay grounded as well as maintaining it’s sense of humor.
The restaurant scene in Portland is trendy and eclectic, full of top notch locations as well as hidden gems. As I am a huge fan of Drive Ins, Diners, and Dives on the Food Network, I couldn’t pass up a visit to Bunk Sandwiches, which was featured on the show a few months ago.
And my visit didn’t disappoint! This hole in the wall restaurant was everything you could hope for in a perfect dive.
Random music, boxes stored right out in open sight, and a chalkboard for a menu. Only a few sandwiches were on the menu, but when your choices are a Pork Belly Cubano, a Grilled Cheese featuring Tillamook Cheddar, or an Oregon Albacore Tuna Melt, you don’t really need much more!
I selected the Roast Beef with carmelized onions, cheddar, and horseradish sauce. The bread was crusty and chewy, the roast beef lean, the onions deliciously sweet, and the horseradish delightfully spicy. A perfect way to fuel up for a big day of spectatoring!
And I wasn’t the only one who got into the racing environment!
